31 Dec stf 20th Anniversary 2019
We celebrated our 20th Anniversary …
2019 marks the 20th Anniversary of Shakespeare at the Tobacco Factory (stf), an independent theatre company founded by Andrew Hilton with our first highly praised performances of A Midsummer Night’s Dream and King Lear in 2000 and gaining charitable status in 2004.
We celebrated our anniversary at Tobacco Factory Theatres in September 2019. Our audience included stf Friends, Patrons and Benefactors , past company actors, Volunteer members and businesses who have supported us during the past 20 years through generous Corporate Sponsorship .
Our annual Director’s Talk with director Elizabeth Freestone and the cast of Much Ado About Nothing was followed by performances from stf Past Productions and we were delighted that past company actors joined us for the celebrations. John Mackay and Lucy Black performed a scene from Measure For Measure directed by Andrew Hilton in 2007 and Jamie Ballard performed a scene from Hamlet directed by Jonathan Miller in 2008 ..

Other performances included actors Dorothea Myer-Bennett, Paul Brendan, Jonathan Nibbs and Julia Hills who sang Helena’s song from All’s Well That Ends Well (written by Dominic Power) accompanied by Peter Clifford, John Telfer and Elizabeth Purnell.
‘I can hardly believe stf has entered its 20th year, in 1999 we set out – rather ambitiously everyone thought – to do five years, and then we converted to a charity in 2004 another five. But here we are, with a 20th season and a second production of Much Ado About Nothing.’ Andrew Hilton stf Founder
‘I’m pinching myself every time I think about the cast we’ve assembled for Much Ado About Nothing in stf’s anniversary year.’ Director Elizabeth Freestone Much Ado About Nothing 2019
‘I first joined Shakespeare at the Tobacco Factory two years after graduating from BOVTS and they couldn’t get rid of me; it’s a truly wonderful company to work for.‘ Dorothea Myer-Bennett, Beatrice in Much Ado About Nothing 2019.
‘As we celebrate our 20th anniversary I feel honoured to have worked with the many people who have been crucial to the Company’s extraordinary success – our Founder and former Artistic Director Andrew Hilton, George Ferguson and Tobacco Factory Theatres, our management staff, our fabulous company of actors, directors, technicians, freelancers, trustees, members, volunteers, supporters, sponsors, trusts and foundations, touring partners and loyal audiences.’ Morag Massey, Executive Director stf
‘ I had two of the best years of my life training at Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, feeding off Bristol’s ridiculously vibrant arts scene, in which stf plays such a gigantic role… So it was pretty overwhelming walking in on Day One of rehearsals knowing I was about to start working both for a company I really loved watching while training alongside these actors I’d always massively admired.’ Alex Wilson, BOVTS graduate playing Borachio and Friar in Much Ado About Nothing 2019.
